Connection SCOM 2016 to OMS

Welcome back, to my third post about OMS in my “about OMS” series on blog.tritze.eu. In this post, I want to show how to connect your on-premises System Center Operations Manager instance to Operations Management Suite.

In my case, I use the OMS free data plan, but if you want to use OMS in production and already purchased System Center, there is a great option called “Operations Management Suit add-on for System Center”. If you already System Center customer you can buy OMS access to a cheaper price per node. For more information’s about this I highly recommend this link to Microsoft’s official OMS pricing guidelines.

Back to topic. What are the benefits of connecting SCOM to OMS? With the connection between them you can select each with SCOM monitored Agent to push its data to OMS, which is much more easy then configuring each MMAgent by hand. The main benefit is that now SCOM Data is accessible in OMS, including SCOM Alerts, event data, performance signatures and health statuses of the monitored objects. To configure the connection between SCOM and OMS an OMS workspace must be already in place. The creation is done under the Administration -> Operations Management Suite -> Connection section of the SCOM Console.

Let’s start with a click on Register to Operations Management Suite.

Logon with a user account which have administrative rights on an OMS workspace assigned.

If you get these message, there are some problems with the security settings of the Internet Explorer. To solve this I disabled the IE Advanced Security Configuration and reset all IE security settings.

Selection of the OMS workspace to connect to:

That’s it, connecting SCOM to OMS is so simple … J

To select which SCOM Agent data should be pushed to OMS, a simple click on Add a Computer/Group can help.

I added them all ;-). To keep it simple a cover-all-group would be also possible.

No switching back to the OMS website and let’s check what is possible with this connection. First thing is that now a System Center Connection is visibe.

What to do know with the data collected by SCOM? First thing is the Alert Management Dashboard, which is a OMS Solution which just have to be added:

With this OMS Solution, all SCOM Alerts are visible in OMS in a cool and sexy way:

The second OMS Solution I want to show you as a small overview is the, currently as preview available, OMS Solution called System Center Operations Manager Assessment, which shows you tips and tricks to tune your SCOM installation.

Unfortunately the “Performing Assessment” would not finish, so maybe I have to test this later.

Finally keep in mind that with SCOM connected to OMS searching for data is possible in the same easy way than each other data in OMS. Also, if you don’t have SCOM 2016, a connection with OMS is possible with SCOM 2012 SP1 with a minimum of UR6 and SCOM 2012 R2 with a minimum of UR2.
